Summer Vacation During COVID with Children’s Books

I refuse to cancel Summer!

As parents, we have sacrificed quite a bit during the pandemic. Yes, for good reason. But if we are being honest, it still sucked. And no matter where you are on the spectrum of ‘getting the vaccine’– we all are wondering: ‘How are we keeping the kids entertained this summer?’

Here in Texas, our summer break begins in about 4 weeks. It is still up in the air if our summer will include travel. But we know one thing for sure; we will be traveling less by plane and more through books!

Recently, we were featured on Haven Life where we shared how we are handling summer vacation during COVID.

So…If you are wondering:

  1. How Summer 2021 travel will be different?
  2. Should I travel internationally during the COVID-19 pandemic?
  3. Will it be safe to travel in 2021?

…rest assured that no matter how often you plan to travel, you can still explore new countries and places with your kiddos through books.

The children should have the joy of living in far lands, in other persons, in other times– a delightful double existence; and this joy they will find, for the most part, in their story-books.

Traveling the world through books… sounds awesome right?! But how do you do it?
The first thing you have to do is consider your family’s interests and the types of things/ places/ cultures– you’d like to learn about. Putting together a book list for your Summer travels doesn’t have to be daunting.

Here are some items to consider when putting together ‘Summer Vacation During COVID’ Reading List:

  1. Where did you plan to travel?
  2. What cultures do you want your family to explore?
  3. Have you looked into your own rich heritage?
  4. How about traveling to a different country every week?

When you pin down the type of travel you plan to focus on, finding the books are always the next step. There are many ways to go about locating books to help with your ‘Summer travel’.

Here are some places to search when gathering books for your summer picture book list:

  1. Your local library; librarians love to help us with children’s books projects
  2. Ask a friend from another country what their favorite picture books are based on their country or heritage
  3. Search online bookstores or ask in a local bookshop
  4. Your favorite book lady — ME! 😆

We’ve started to do some research of our own to plan our Summer vacation plans. Check out the list below and let us know if you plan to add any of these titles to your Summer reading list.
